Karnataka food safety department inspects sweet units, seizes food products worth Rs 6 lakh

The drive, conducted on the directions of Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader, covered sweet manufacturing units in Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), Mysuru, Dakshina Kannada, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Hubballi-Dharwad.

Officials inspected 16 units and collected samples of sweets, cooking oil, curd, pulses, chickpeas, jalebi, khova, tea powder and other food products for laboratory analysis.
The department seized five litres of expired Nandini curd, along with 13 large and six small packets of chocolate decoration products for improper labelling. It also seized 10 kg of chocolate flavour and 5 kg of rasgulla.
Around 60 kg of food products, including banana chips and chakli masala, were found to be misbranded. The products did not carry mandatory details such as the manufacturer's name and address and FSSAI licence number.
Officials also seized 367 kg of ready-to-eat savouries, 4 kg of cocoa powder, 4.5 kg of cracked cocoa beans, 6 kg of khova and 196 kg of fennel powder during the inspections.
The department said samples collected during the drive have been sent to authorised laboratories to assess their quality, safety and compliance with food safety standards.
Further legal action will be initiated against establishments found violating provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the rules and regulations framed under it, the department said.
The department said enforcement drives would continue to ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene and labelling standards and protect consumers.
