DIBRUGARH: The Assam Branch of Indian Tea Association on Saturday stressed the need for improving productivity in the tea sector to achieve global competitiveness.

Addressing its annual general meeting here, its Chairman J Bezborua said that trade unions attached to the tea industry must cooperate to improve productivity.

He also stressed the utilisation of the Special Purpose Tea Fund for promoting replanting and rejuvenation at the grassroot level which would improve the yield.

He said the association had requested the Assam government for exemption of cess on green leaf to make Assam tea more attractive, particularly for the Pakistan market.

Exports of Indian tea had come down by 170 million kgs while Assam's exports have declined by 12 million kgs in 2007.

Bezboruah said that the industry was pursuing a generic promotion campaign with the Tea Board to promote domestic consumption of tea whose growth rate remained more or less constant.
