KOCHI: With India and Pakistan embarking on measures to improve trade relations between the two nations, India must tap the huge tea market in Pakistan, the world's second largest importer of tea, Union minister of state for Commerce, Jairam Ramesh said today.

Pakistan imports about 140 million kgs of tea every year and India had exported about 16 million kg last year, Ramesh told reporters here.

The minister said he had met Pakistan Commerce Secretary Syed Asif Shah two days ago, following which Pakistan had for the first time, allowed export of tea from India through rail.

"In the next 3 to 4 months some problems relating to container trafffic have to be resolved and by next year, the rail route is expected to be cleared", he said.

India had identified three new markets for tea exports-- Pakistan, Egypt and Iran, which totally account for a 200 million kg market. India's share in these markets was less than 10 per cent at present, he added.
