Govt fixes wheat import norms at Codex level

Government has fixed the wheat import norms to Codex level in the third round of global wheat tender floated by State Trading Corporation.

NEW DELHI: Government has fixed the wheat import norms to Codex level in the third round of global wheat tender floated by State Trading Corporation.

The wheat import specifications have been fixed at par with existing CODEX level in the recent round of wheat import tender, Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh told reporters after the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.

The lukewarm response in the second round of global wheat import tender led the government to float a fresh round of global wheat import tender for remaining 22 lakh tonne.

Government this year allowed import of wheat after a gap of six years to tide over the situation emerging out due to low level of procurement for central pool which is maintained for smooth functioning of Public Distribution System.

In earlier two rounds, 13 lakh tonnes could be contracted out of the total tender demand of 35 lakh tonne.
