Gear up for fight in probiotics!

A showdown of heavyweights like Amul, Nestle, Yakult-Danone and Mother Diary is in the offing in probiotics segment with the firms announcing new products for the market.

NEW DELHI: A showdown of heavyweights like Amul, Nestle, Yakult-Danone and Mother Diary is in the offing in probiotics segment with the firms announcing new products for the market.

"Considering that consumer choices are becoming more health specific, the probiotic segment is expected to contribute 10 per cent to our overall sales over the next few years," Amul Chief General Manager R S Sodhi told the media.

Amul is the first mover in the segment having launched its probiotic ice-creams.

Japan's Yakult, which has partnered with French dairy major Danone to enter the probiotic food market in India, has lined up an investment of Rs 136 crore which includes setting up a unit in Karnal, Haryana and is expected to soon launch its product range here.

"Though India's probiotic market is still at a nascent stage, we foresee a lot of activity in the next few years with several global and Indian companies venturing into the segment. We feel it is the right time to launch probiotic food products here," Yakult Danone India Pvt Ltd Managing Director Kiyoshi Oike said.

While pioneer in the probiotic market, Amul has already announced intentions to make the segment contribute 10 per cent to its overall revenues, Mother Dairy India Ltd (MDIL) will be foraying into the segment with the launch of its 'b-active' curd in the NCR.
