Fix minimum price for green tea, Karuna asks Centre
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Saturday requested the Centre to fix the minimum price at a very reasonable level for green tea leaves grown by small growers and protect them from financial crisis.
In a letter to the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Karunanidhi said the condition of the small tea growers in Nilgiris district, which survived primarily on tea business and accounted for 70 per cent of total tea production in the State was pathetic.
Many of them had mortgaged their lands for raising the tea crops and were unable to repay the loan amount, he said. Since 1998, the small tea growers and the labourers were agitating for fixing reasonable price for green tea leaves, Karunanidhi said.
Now, the Madras High Court, in a petition seeking fixing minimum price for tea leaves, had also directed the government to consider the petitioner's representation and pass appropriate orders within two weeks, he added.
