ITANAGAR: The Food Corporation of India has taken over six new base depots in Arunachal Pradesh as part of their strategy to prevent rampant pilferages and ensure distribution of essential items in every nook and corners of the hilly border state fron the New Year day.

Addressing a press conference here last night FCI Executive Director (Finance) J Srivastava said FCI has four depots, all located near the Assam-Arunachal border.

He said in view of the rampant pilferages FCI has decided to open base depots in six strategic areas of the state which will be located atleast 200-250 km inside the state to make such act economically not profitable.

These base depots will also feed 13 principal distribution centres, some of which will be in inaccessible areas near China border like Kibitho in Anjaw district and Damin in Kurung Kume district.

Srivastava heading a three-member high level FCI team on a three-day tour of different inaccessible areas of the state, said that FCI gave ad-hoc advance of Rs 24 crore to the state government for payment of transportation bills for the first quarter of the current year.

The team, which included H S Bajwa, Joint Director (movement) of Union Ministry of Food and S S Bhatoa, executive (N-E zone) also checked samples of PDS items from different areas of the state and the records of fair price shops.

The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Food had stopped giving hill transport subsidy since 2004 following complaints of huge pilferages of PDS items and filing of a PIL.
