FCI makes Tawang and Ziro base depots functional
Food Corporation of India (FCI) has made its Ziro and Tawang base depots in Arunachal Pradesh functional this month by making rice available.
Private contractors appointed by FCI have transported 3,000 quintals of rice to Ziro and 2,000 quintals to Tawang godowns, state food and civil supplies secretary Hage Kojeen said.
A high level FCI team led by its executive director (finance) J Srivastava visited inaccessible areas of the state last month to revamp the PDS.
Srivastava had later told newsmen that six new base depots would be made functional at Dapiorijo, Ziro, Anini, Tawang, Tezu and Seppa from this month to reach PDS items to people in far flung areas of this hilly state, specially along the Chinese border.
The union ministry of food had stopped hill transport subsidy since 2004 following complaints of diversion of the PDS items to Assam and the filing of a PIL against carriage contractors and others alleging false carriage bills running into crores of rupees.
The four-member FCI team during its visit had decided to open the six new base depots 200 to 250 km inside Arunachal Pradesh to make diversion of PDS items uneconomical as part of a new strategy to stop pilferages, Kojeen said.
The formalities to open the remaining base depots are at the final stage, he added.
