Exports of tea, textiles witness negative growth

The government today said sectors such as textiles, tea, coffee, fruits and cotton have seen a negative growth in exports during the first half of the current fiscal due to a sharp rise in the value of rupee against the dollar.

NEW DELHI: The government today said sectors such as textiles, tea, coffee, fruits and cotton have seen a negative growth in exports during the first half of the current fiscal due to a sharp rise in the value of rupee against the dollar.

"As per preliminary estimates, during the first half of the current year, there has been negative growth in export of textiles, handicraft, tea, coffee, fruits, vegetables, carpet, plastic, linoleum, cashew, cotton, yarn, fabrics, made-ups and jute manufacturing including floor covering," Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

During April-September 2007, export growth has decelerated to 18.5 per cent in dollar terms against a 22.6 per cent growth registered in 2006-07, he said.

Due to decline in exports to countries like Iraq and Pakistan and the appreciation of rupee, volume of tea exports from India has declined during the first half of the ongoing fiscal over the corresponding period of last financial year.

In January-September 2007, India exported 118.74 million kg tea valued at Rs 1,170.78 crore, while the same stood at 155.9 million kg valued at Rs 1,427.42 crore in the corresponding period of previous fiscal.

To another question, Ramesh said the government had increased the outlay for boards of commodities like tea, rubber, coffee and spices for the 11th plan period to about Rs 3,000 crore from Rs 1,200 crore in the previous plan to benefit the plantation sector.
