Edible oil imports decline: IVPA pushes for India’s self-sufficiency

The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA), the apex body of the edible oil refining industry, has called for accelerating the path towards self-sufficiency in edible oil amidst declining imports, policy shifts and evolving free trade agreements.

“India’s vegetable oils industry is navigating a critical phase marked by global price volatility in palm and soybean oils, evolving free trade agreements, and domestic policy challenges. While these dynamics present opportunities for strategic sourcing and operational efficiency, they also highlight the delicate balance required between ensuring farmers’ MSP, controlling edible oil-driven inflation, and maintaining food price stability,” the association said in its 48th Annual General Meeting held today.

IVPA has re-appointed Mr. Sudhakar Desai as president and the four vice-presidents for 2025-2026 term at its AGM.


“With imports stabilizing and showing signs of decline, there is renewed urgency to accelerate the path toward self-sufficiency in edible oils, despite competition from other key crops like pulses, rice, and wheat,” the newly elected president Desai added.

Mr. Desai is joined by industry veterans such as Vijay Kumar Jain, Vice President, Patanjali Foods Limited, Amrendra Mishra (MD, ADM), Bhavna Shah (Deputy CEO, NK Proteins Ltd.) and Dhritiman Biswas (Senior Director - Government Relations, South Asia, Cargill India) as vice presidents.

Desai said his reappointment along with the core team signals continuity aimed at driving the IVPA’s core objective.

“With a robust team, IVPA is set for another impactful term focused on creating value, driving innovation, and building strong collaborations that benefit the entire vegetable oil industry,” he added.
