Cooperative Milk Producers Union to modernize chilling plant

PUDUCHERRY: State owned Cooperative Milk Producers Union, popularly known as `PONLAIT` has drawn up plans to modernize its milk chilling plant here at a cost of Rs 10 crores in a phased manner.

Official sources told reporters here today that the modernization would be of help to bring in new infrastructures in the chilling unit and also in other aspects of the plant which was set up some twenty years ago.

Puducherry needs around 1.10 lakh litres of milk a day. The PONLAIT which supplies by procuring milk from the primary cooperative societies around 35,000 litres a day is meeting the deficit by procuring milk from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

With the Puducherry government encouraging dairy projects by extending subsidy for purchase of milch cows under the Rashtriya Vikas Kisan Yojana the Union Territory is expected to register higher production of milk.
