Building the route to India: Russian oil and mineral water producers expand overseas
Ecooil and Akva-Kristall are strategically enhancing export ties with Indian buyers. Leveraging their strong infrastructure for production, quality assurance, and logistics, Ecooil is set to boost sunflower oil exports, while Akva-Kristall is laun...
A workday at the oil plant starts long before the finished batch reaches the tanker. First, sunflower seeds arrive from fields in the Tambov region. The lab tests the raw material, which is then fed into production, where presses separate the oil. From there, tanks, a rail line, and paperwork take over the route. There's no random link in this sequence: an Indian buyer needs stable product characteristics and an equally predictable shipping schedule.
Ecooil JSC entered the Indian market in 2025 and is now increasing its shipment volumes. The company exports unrefined sunflower oil in bulk, a raw material for further processing on the customer's end. This kind of trade rarely shows up on the end consumer's radar, but it illustrates well how large food businesses are built: the contract rests on lab results, production capacity, and logistics.
The infrastructure behind the export
Ecooil's plant operates in the Tambov region and brings together several full-cycle production sites. It includes a grain elevator with a capacity of 250,000 tons, warehouses, storage tanks for oil and lecithin, an accredited lab, its own vehicle fleet, and a rail line. Sunflower seeds come in both from the agricultural holding's own facilities and from regional farms. The oil is extracted through hot pressing without organic solvents. Before pressing, the raw material is heated to 100–120 degrees Celsius. The plant makes its products to Russian standards and operates under the ISO 22000 food safety management system. For a foreign partner, these technical terms translate into a very practical story: every large batch has to meet the agreed specifications, or processing will run into trouble later at the buyer's own plant.
This fall, the plant is preparing for its next step: a new multi-feedstock workshop is set to launch in October 2026. It will be able to process up to 2,000 tons of sunflower seeds a day, twice its current capacity, and will also handle rapeseed and soybeans. For the India business, that's a margin of safety for years to come, since volumes can grow without having to rebuild the entire production chain for a single new contract.
Shipments to India add to a route map that already includes Turkey, China, Belarus, and Iran. Bulk oil shipping requires coordinating transport, timelines, port or rail infrastructure, and storage conditions. That's why the plant's own rail line isn't just a feature of the factory grounds; it's part of the export product itself.
This is where the gap between advertised and actual capacity becomes especially clear. Tons quoted in a presentation don't move anything by themselves; what actually gets things moving is the combination of the elevator, the lab, the tanks, and transport working together. If one link falls behind schedule, the delay quickly becomes everyone's problem. That's exactly why the workshop expansion needs to be considered alongside the infrastructure that already surrounds the plant.

When quality becomes a business credential
In September 2025, Ecooil's sunflower oil completed voluntary ‘Made in Russia’ certification under the ‘Reliability’ category. The national mark won't appear on a bottle: the product ships in bulk and takes its final consumer form later down the line. The certificate works on a business level, serving as proof of a completed audit for a company choosing a raw material supplier. The programme promoting products under the ‘Made in Russia’ national brand is run by the Russian Export Center. For Ecooil, joining the programme coincided with the start of its India push: in late September, the company plans to build on that momentum at the Globoil India 2026 industry conference, running from September 29 to October 1. There, discussions about oil are conducted in the language of harvests, processing margins, freight, and long-term volumes, precisely where production discipline turns into a competitive edge.
That same focus on consistent quality, controlled production, and the ability to deliver at scale is shaping the India strategy of other Russian producers as well. For Akva-Kristall, the story begins not with oil, but with the protected waters of the Caucasus.

Caucasus water for India: Akva-Kristall introduces its beverages from Nalchik
Akva-Kristall, based in Nalchik, has been producing ICE MOUNTAIN mineral drinking water and other non-alcoholic beverages since 2006. Today, the company is developing its export business in India.Production is based in Kabardino-Balkaria, in the foothills of the Caucasus. The water is drawn from a well 230 meters deep, a protected aquifer that isn't affected by seasonal rainfall or surface contamination. Bottling takes place right at the source, which preserves the water's natural composition and keeps it free from outside influence. Every batch goes through multi-stage filtration that removes clay and sand while preserving the minerals and original taste. The plant runs lab testing at every stage of production.
What makes the product unique isn't just the water itself, but also the patented bottle with its original ornamental design. The look combines Caucasus-inspired motifs with modern ergonomics. That packaging doesn't just protect the water; it also makes the product instantly recognisable on the shelf.
Akva-Kristall produces natural mineral water, carbonated drinks, lemonades, kvass, and iced tea. Products are bottled in both glass and PET packaging. Glass underscores the premium positioning, while PET is well suited for long-distance shipping. The lineup works for retail chains, the HoReCa sector, and export partners alike.
One separate line focuses on lemonades with health-conscious properties. The company is developing a range where a refreshing taste is paired with functional ingredients, responding to Indian consumers' growing demand for natural drinks and lower sugar content. What sets it apart is the combination of pure deep-well water, the patented bottle, and formulas designed with potential health benefits in mind.
The products have earned a Gold Medal in Berlin at the International Green Week Berlin exhibition, the ‘100 Best Goods of Russia’ certification, the ‘Made in Russia’ mark, and numerous gold and silver medals. In 2026, the company took first place in the ‘Food Products’ category among small and medium-sized enterprises from Russia's North Caucasus Federal District at the national ‘Exporter of the Year. Made in Russia’ award for international cooperation and export. The company's products are shipped to the United States, Canada, Azerbaijan, Moldova, and countries across the CIS.
Entering the Indian market marks an important milestone for the company. Akva-Kristall is ready to discuss long-term contracts. Caucasus water from Nalchik could become a permanent fixture in the lineup of Indian importers.
For both Ecooil and Akva-Kristall, the route to India begins well before a shipment reaches an Indian port or a product reaches a shelf. It starts with the source, continues through production, quality control and packaging, and ultimately depends on whether an exporter can deliver consistently and at scale. Sunflower oil from the fields of Tambov and mineral water from the foothills of the Caucasus may serve very different markets, but their export stories point in the same direction: Russian producers are looking to build lasting commercial relationships in India by combining established production capabilities with the infrastructure and standards needed to support long-term supply. As these companies expand their presence, the next stage will be measured not simply by individual shipments, but by whether these routes can become dependable, recurring links between Russian producers and Indian buyers.
