Broiler meat output may grow by 10% in 2007

Country's broiler meat production is likely to grow by 10 per cent to 2.2 million tonne in 2007, the latest update of US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said.

NEW DELHI: Country's broiler meat production is likely to grow by 10 per cent to 2.2 million tonne in 2007, the latest update of US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said.

The growth projection is based on the assumption that the country remains free from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

"Production growth is supported by likely strong growth in domestic poultry meat demand in response to affordable prices and increasing incomes," USDA said.

The projected growth in output would also be supplemented by increasing trends towards integrated poultry operations, and improving bird weights and dressing yields due to better genetics.

USDA said the India's broiler industry, which was growing at over 15 per cent per annum in recent years, was badly hit due to the outbreak of HPAI in February this year.

Interestingly, the Department has revised downwards the broiler meat production for 2006 to two million tonne from 2.2 million tonne, owing to losses caused by the avian influenza outbreak in some parts of the Western India.

Consequent to the outbreak in the major poultry belt, the price remained below cost of production for several months and caused colossal financial losses to the poultry industry and forced several units to scale down or close operations.

The poultry sector in India employs three million people and contributes Rs 26,000 crore to the national income.

USDA said high corn prices continue to affect profit margins, though market prices have recovered since May.

"Maize prices will soften with the harvest of new crop in October. Consequently, market sources expect a strong recovery in broiler production in last quarter of calendar year 2006," it said.

The per capita consumption of poultry meet in India stood at 1.9 kg in 2006, the USDA report said. "High muttons prices, religious restrictions on beef and pork, and availability of fish mainly in coastal regions has made poultry meat the most preferred and consumed meat in India," it said.

The poultry feed consumption is estimated at 14 million tonne in 2006 compared to 13.2 million tonnes in the year ago period, with the major ingredients being corn (seven million tonnes) and soyabean meal (1.8 million tonnes).

The US agency observed that the feed prices have increased in 2006 by 14 per cent in comparison to last year.

This price rise was mainly due to high corn price that is currently ruling at a record $158 per tonne.
