CHENNAI: The PMK, a constitutent of the ruling UPA at the Centre on Saturday demanded a ban on big industrial houses trading in foodgrains, besides a ban on future and online trading, to control the price hike of essential commodities.

PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss, in a statement, said that big industrial houses using online and future trading had procured and 'hoarded' essential commodities.

The Tamil Nadu government should strongly demand the ban in the National Development Council meeting to be held soon, he said.

In the meanwhile, the state should use its powers and take stern action against hoarding of essential commodities to make them available at affordable prices to the common man, he said.

He pointed out that the state government, which announced that a ceiling would be fixed on quantum of stocks of wheat and edible oil, had not taken any action on it so far. "The government should take steps on a war footing on this", he said

He said the prices of rice, pulses and edible oil had gone by 10 to 25 per cent.

Ramadoss suggested that the state follow the example of the Delhi government, which had acted on the Centre's request to states to take action against hoarders and dehoarded three lakh tonnes of foodgrains, this had resulted in reduction of prices, he added.
