NEW DELHI: The Government is planning to launch a major campaign across 15 cities including metros to make street food vendors aware about standard quality norms, food processing minister Subodh Kant Sahai said.
"We are planning to start a campaign across 15 cities to modify the street food business and to motivate vendors to have a hygienic approach to selling their products," Sahai said at a CII seminar on packaging here today.
The Minister said vendors would be provided with cubicles through bank tie-ups under the initiative, to be launched with industry body CII.
Under the campaign, health cards would be issued to the food vendors, besides providing insurance coverage.
The cubicles would have the facilities of proper storage of water and wastages, he said, but declined to give details of financial obligation of the campaign.
Dwelling on the role of the packaging industry, he said it is an integral part of the food processing industry.
He highlighted the packaging industries role in ensuring quality and safety of food items in ready-to-eat food culture.
He stressed on strict compliance of food quality norms in rural areas.
