Amul hikes milk prices by Rs 2 a litre from today

Milk prices were last revised two years back in March 2017, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which sells milk and milk products under the Amul brand.

NEW DELHI: Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, which markets the Amul brand of dairy products, has increased milk prices by Rs 2 a litre across the country, citing higher input costs.

The move will likely prompt other suppliers to follow, top industry executives said.

The new prices will come into effect on Tuesday, said managing director RS Sodhi. The dairy cooperative passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers to milk producers. The increase comes two years after prices were raised by a similar amount.

ET reported in March that traders expected prices to go up after the general elections, which ended on May 19.

“Over the last one year, there has been a major increase in price of major cattle feed ingredients and green fodder. To ensure that it doesn’t impact production, we have increased farmers’ price by Rs 2-3 a litre and will be increasing it further. Hence, the additional cost has been passed on to the consumer,” said Sodhi.
