Class C states, which pay the lowest price for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) packs, outpaced all other markets in driving household product growth in the last calendar year, according to a Kantar Worldpanel report. Government programmes such as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan started changing the tide for a few categories and then the pandemic created sustained demand in these states.

Uttar Pradesh, the largest state in India, pays about Rs 112 for every unit of FMCG that it purchases, the lowest in the country. It’s followed by other Class C states Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Gujarat, which all spend less than Rs 120 for one FMCG unit.

Against that, Class A states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Odisha have a per-unit price (PUP) of over Rs 130. Class B states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab and West Bengal pay between Rs 120 and Rs 130.
