Sponsored: Platinum jewellery is a good bet, and a good gift
Fine precious jewellery is a perfectly good option when it comes to picking a gift for a birthday or anniversary.
As precious metals go, platinum is there at the very top. The silver-grey metal that is naturally its colour from the time it's mined till set in jewellery is already a favourite of jewellers and buyers internationally, is fast finding favour in India. And it's about time, says couture jeweller Poonam Soni, who adds that more exposure, and even education, has created a buzz around platinum jewellery.
“Previously, no one experimented. Most designers worked with gold because they didn't know much about other metals, and in fact, they created the more flamboyant pieces in gold. But that's changing. Also, the prices of platinum and gold are almost on par, but platinum remains a higher end metal. And it's denser and stronger. Diamonds, especially solitaires, set better in platinum...they hardly ever fall,” she says.
The jewellery designer, who is known for her bespoke, one-of-a-kind pieces, believes that platinum has an edge over gold, because it is a rare and exclusive metal, with a stable colour that doesn't tarnish with time. “All platinum jewellery comes with a Pt 950 [purity] stamp. I'd say [platinum] is an addiction for connoisseurs of fine jewellery,” Soni adds.
Here, Poonam Soni lists for us five pieces of jewellery that would make great gifts (men are you listening?):
1) A platinum solitaire ring
2) A platinum chain pendant
3) A stunning platinum wrist-wear and earrings set with cool blue gemstones and brilliant
icy diamonds
4) Floral platinum earrings for everyday wear
5) A platinum clasp, green-blue tourmalines, aquamarines, platinum beads and diamonds
