Kimaya firms up plans for US & UK presence

The privately-held company will also unveil three more specialty formats as it expands to smaller cities within India, and is also working on a public issue.

BANGALORE: Indias largest designerwear chain Kimaya is eyeing bigger international presence, as it firms up plans to enter the US and the UK. The privately-held company will also unveil three more specialty formats as it expands to smaller cities within India, and is also working on a public issue.

We had almost signed on an agreement for a store in the US, but that did not happen. However, we are looking for spaces there and it should happen soon, said Kimaya Fashions chairman Pradeep Hirani. Mr Hirani sad he was not looking to cater to the NRI population in these countries.

Appealing to the craze for Indian products abroad is enough reason to enter these markets, he said Kimaya, with a store in Dubai, will also look at entering Kuwait this year.

The company, which has 132 designers under its fold, making it the largest designerwear store chain in the country, is planning to open a separate menswear specialty store chain called Ayamik, exclusively for French and Italian labels, and another separate chain for Kimaya bridalwear.

In the next three years, we are planning to open 48 outlets as we look to tap markets in smaller cities like Ahmedabad, Ludhiana, Nagpur and Chandigarh.

We see big growth in these towns, Mr Hirani said. The company has three stores in Mumbai, Delhi and Dubai. By next month, they will also have a store in Bangalores first luxury mall in UB City, where they have taken 10,000 sq ft space.
