IT officials search GRT premises
Income-tax officials conducted searches at premises of the GRT Group across south India on suspicion of tax evasion by the jewellery retailer and hotels operator.
The income tax department began the searches at 8 am on Thursday, said an income tax official, requesting anonymity. The searches were still going on, the source added.
“Yes, search is on at the premises of GRT Group. We cannot provide more details. You will get a detailed report tomorrow only,” said the source at the Income Tax Office in Chennai. The company could not be immediately reached for comments.
G. R. Thanga Maligai, popularly known as GRT, is a jewellery firm based in the Chennai. It is considered to be the number one player in Chennai since 1964.
The Chennai-based group has diversified businesses with interests in hospitality, jewellery, agriculture, education, trading and non conventional power.
