B'lore to host jewellery meet

BANGALORE: The World Gold Council (WGC) has chosen Bangalore to play host to the first of its kind B2B jewellers show in south India called South India Jewellery Show (SIJS).
The B2B business which largely deals with the back-end (supply chain) is a forgotten sector in the industry driven by the retail frenzy, as trade taps into India’s billion plus yellow metal obsessed populace.
“The SIJS platform would facilitate closer interaction between the retailers and the manufacturers. It would provide for a two-way traffic for business expansion,” Mr K Shivram, vice-president of WGC told ET. SIJS is slated to be held over a three-day period starting on February 16, 2007.
“The month of February would provide a platform for the participants to place orders and receive their stocks well ahead of the marriage season in south India as well as to meet demand arising during the auspicious Akshaya Trithiya day,” said Mr Sumesh Wadhera of the Art of Jewellery, one of the co-organisers of the SIJS.
The show would feature gold jewellery producers from centres like Rajkot and Coimbatore besides having diamond jewellery producers. And with the Union government keen to push the concept of hallmarking, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will also provide an opportunity for on-the-spot hallmarking license being granted to units who want to offer “hallmarked” jewellery to the retail customers.
“There is huge demand for qualified jewellery professionals in the country. The placement facility would serve as the best platform where these recently graduated students can seek job opportunities,” he added.
Currently the most popular B2B show is the India-International Jewellery Show (IIJS) which is organised by the Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). It is positioned as a window for the Indian jewellery industry to tap into the global markets.
