Zicom Electronic to unveil bio-metric locks

Mumbai-based Zicom Electronic Security Systems Ltd (ZESSL) has decided to unveil bio-metric locks that will work on an individual's thumb impression for home security.


KOLKATA: Khul ja sim sim! Believe it or not, you can actually dump your house keys and instead use the thumb to open the door lock.

Mumbai-based Zicom Electronic Security Systems Ltd (ZESSL) has decided to unveil bio-metric locks that will work on an individual's thumb impression for home security.

"The market for such home solutions is estimated at about Rs 200 crore and we've decided to position ZESSL as a home security solutions provider. It will offer a complete range of security solutions including intrusion detection system, gas leakage detection system, and bio-metric locks. It will also include 'video door' systems that will allow residents to see who's at the door through camera," said Mr Manohar Bidaye, chairman ZESSL.

Prices of bio-metric locks have declined dramatically in the last three years. "We have also put in some indegeneous efforts to design the product and this has helped us offer such technology at affordable price. Recently we have decided to introduce it in India. Nevertheless, the entire home security solution will cost about Rs 22 per square feet and the link to the control room will be an additional feature that will come at a fixed rental per month," he said.

"The intrusion detection system will be linked to a central control room that will alert the owner or the police station as the case may be, in case of burglary or other similar incidents," he said.

Bio-metric locks will be able to store as many as 50 thumb impressions and not require any keys. "It may be a combination of password as well as the thumb impression or just the thumb impression," Mr Bidaye added.

In a parallel development, the company has decided to open retail outlets for offering home security solutions. "Till date, we have opened 10 such outlets. The number will be increased to 200 by the year 2008," he said.

ZESSL, is also into institutional security systems and has recently initiated talks with authorities of the Kalighat temple for offering their solutions. "We are in advanced talks with the authorities of Birla Mandir for offering their solutions. ZESSL solutions are already installed at Kashi, Mathura, Ayodhaya temple, and at the Siddhi Vinayak Temple down south India," he added.

About 30% of ZESSL's revenues are from retail sales while about 60% are from institutional sales. A small 10% is from software security solutions segment. Zicom manufactures its products under contract manufacturing at Korea, Taiwan and China.
