Whirlpool says not hurt by rupee appreciation
Whirlpool India on Thursday said the rupee appreciation had not cut into the overseas demand for its products and European countries were continuing to place orders.
"On volume basis, demand is there to be captured," Whirlpool India Vice President (Marketing) Shantanu Das Gupta told reporters here.
Exports account for about 14-15 per cent of the company's turnover, main markets being South Asia, Sri Lanka, Africa, Middle East, Europe and Australia, he said.
The high interest rates had not affected the company's sales so far but it remained a cause of worry.
"So far there has been no impact of high interest rates, but it was a matter of concern," he said adding the market was robust in terms of home appliances purchase.
Whirlpool India, a subsidiary of Whirlpool Corporation, would invest about USD 20 million for manufacturing various products this year.
Unveiling 'Onam' fete plans, company Vice President (Sales) Tamal Kanti Saha said Whirlpool India was targeting a revenue of Rs 60 crore during the festival from Kerala against last year's Rs 40 crore. About Rs 1.5-2 crore would be spent for promotion of its various products, he said.
The firm has launched a promotion programme 'Yellathillum Magic' (Magic in everything) for ramping up sales of its new products across five categories -- refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, microwaves and dryers.
It has tied up with 1,800 retail outlets, including grocery shops, chemists, jewellery shops, household utility stores, and electronics showrooms for the programme.
With the launch of new products, the company expects to notch up a 27 per cent market share in the refrigerator category, 20 per cent in the washing machine category and 10 per cent in the air conditioner category in the country this year.
"Kerala is an important market for us. We are overwhelmed with the response received last year and are confident of further improving our performance in this market," Gupta said.
The company has recorded a 30 per cent growth in sales in the state this year, "and with the aggressively growing direct distribution network in the state, is expecting to surpass the figure this year."
Whirlpool is also organising an 'Onamsadya' recipe contest in seven towns -- Kochi, Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kottayam and Pathnamthitta. Besides, a 'Kaikottikali' dance competition would be held in three cities.
