NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to give further extension to electronics major Whirlpool of India for vacating the premises in Qutub Institutional Area in the capital where lands were allotted at concessional rates to organisations for voluntary work or social services.
A bench comprising Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice P P Naolekar refused to extend time till August 31, as sought by Whirlpool. The apex court on February 13 had allowed the company to occupy the premises till June 15 after it faced immediate eviction following the Delhi High Court order to evict tenants found occupying the premises against law.
Whirlpool counsel Mukul Rohtagi said the work at its newly-acquired premises in Gurgaon was going on full swing and its senior officials were working round-the-clock to ensure timely completion so that it could shift at an early date.
The company said if the time was not extended it would have no option but to stop work as it was not possible to shift intermediate structures till the renovation work at its new site was completed. The company said it had paid an advance of Rs 96 lakh toward rent and had spent Rs two crore on making the premises fit for occupation.
The Delhi High Court in February this year had ordered eviction of tenants from premises at Qutab Institutional Area. However, it had permitted six MNCs to stay for two months.
The Delhi Development Authority had conducted a survey on 26 plots allotted to various societies and trusts and found many irregularities in terms of the lease deeds. The DDA had asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to seal the premises where irregularities were found.
