Toshiba Corporation to start making LCD TVs in India to expand its reach

The company's new research and development centre in Gurgaon will start developing products to serve the needs of Indian consumers.

NEW DELHI: Japanese electronic products and appliances maker Toshiba Corporation is set to overhaul its business strategy for India, which includes starting local manufacturing of LCD televisions, launching cheaper products and revamping existing distribution channel to expand reach.

“We intend to start making LCD TVs in India soon, which are currently imported from our factories in Indonesia,” Wu Tengguo, director (digital products) at Toshiba India Pvt Ltd said. The company’s new research and development centre in Gurgaon will start developing products to serve the needs of Indian consumers, he said.

Toshiba has also entered the 19-inch LCD TV segment at an entry price point of Rs 10,000 to grab a larger share of the Indian television market. The company is eyeing a 10% marketshare in the LCD TV space in the fiscal year ending March’12 from 5% last year, he said.

In July this year, the company also merged its TV and personal computer operations into a single organisation, combining resources and creating a wider network of customer touch points and service centres.

The company is looking at nearly doubling its distribution channel to 6,000 by this fiscal year.
