NEW DELHI: The poaching season has started in retail. Four Whirlpool are joining Wal-Mart in India. Rakesh Tiwari, a senior manager at Whirlpool, has moved in as head of administration at Wal-Mart.
Sources said the executives joining Wal-Mart are those who have worked closely with head of Wal-Marts emerging markets, Asia, and former head of Whirlpool India Raj Jain during his 9-year stint with Whirlpool from 1997 to 2005. This includes a two-year posting in China.
A former executive assistant to Raj Jain and an old Whirpool hand is also joining Wal-Mart in the operations training wing, with another former Whirlpool manager. They are slated to join at the middle level. When contacted, Whirlpools HR head Sanjay Singh confirmed that three executives had already put in their papers. It's an open market and people look for other options.
The consumer goods and retail industry, however, expects another round of hectic poaching as the Bharti-Wal-Mart combo have put five executives search firms on the job to fill crucial posts. The head of food in Metro, P Murali Krishnan, is also slated to join Wal-Mart in a senior position.
Of course, functions which require deep understanding and knowledge of the retail sector may get a few foreign hands. For instance, Wal-Mart's key executive Randy Guttery, a hardcore operations person, is already in India to take charge. The search is on for a CFO and heads of sourcing and merchandising.
