Sun shines on inverter makers; sales jump

Inverter makers are seeing a jump in sales in northern India as the region reels under an intense heat wave and frequent power outages.

NEW DELHI: Inverter makers are seeing a jump in sales in northern India as the region reels under an intense heat wave and frequent power outages.

"There has been an increase in sales for home UPS (or battery-run uninterrupted power supply) and battery business in the last one week in the northern areas because of the power outages and the heatwave," said Manish Pant, managing director at Delhi-based power solution company Luminous. "We are anticipating 20-25 per cent more sales in June compared with May."

Rival Su-Kam said demand has outstripped supply. "There is a four-day waiting for installation of inverters in many northern states including Delhi,” said Kunwar Sachdev, MD of Su-Kam. "We are installing 1.5 lakh inverters a month now, so whatever we have produced over the months is all sold."

A senior executive at battery maker Exide said his company has also seen a significant jump in sales of home UPS and inverter batteries in the National Capital Region over the last week.
