Sony PlayStation 5 Pro launch in India cancelled due to 6GHz

Sony Playstation 5 Pro, the company's latest gaming console, will not be released in India because of compatibility issues with the 6GHz spectrum band, the company said.

In an official statement, Sony said "PS5 Pro will not be available in some countries (which presently includes India) where 6GHz wireless band used in IEEE 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) has not yet been allowed."

The gaming console uses Wi-Fi 7, a wireless standard that uses the 6GHz band for connecting to the internet. However, the band itself is embroiled under controversy with telecom operators pushing for it to be reserved for mobile internet services.


Big tech companies like Amazon, Google and Meta along with router makers are pushing to delicense the band for use in Wi-Fi services. In India, Wi-Fi services are offered in the 2.5GHz and the 5GHz bands.

The government is yet to clarify whether the band will be entirely delicensed or license it for telecom operators to bid and use.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is the latest consumer electronics device to fall victim to the ongoing debate. Latest generation Wi-Fi routers are also not officially sold in India.
