Simmtronics gets $10 million order to make high end tablet PCs
"The order is worth $ 10 million which includes production of high-end tablets costing $180 per unit," Simmtronics Semiconductors MD said.
"We have seen trust of foreign firms increasing towards products manufactured in India. Three firms based in Middle East have selected us for making tablets for sale in overseas market.
"The order is worth $ 10 million which includes production of high-end tablets costing $ 180 per unit," Simmtronics Semiconductors Managing Director Indrajit Sabharwal told PTI.
He named Dubai based Jumbo Electronics as one of the firms that has signed the deal with the company.
"High end tablets constitute 25 per cent of the total orders. Rest of the order is for tablets in 9.7, 8 and 7 inch size which will have SIM card slot and can be used for phone calls," Sabharwal said.
The government imposed 6 per cent custom duty on mobile phones priced above Rs 2,000, including tablets in the budget for current fiscal, making their imports costlier, he added.
Elaborating further on high-end tablet models that are to be exported, he said the product will be built on Android platform's latest version Jelly Bean with a 1.2 Gigahertz quad core processor.
"These high end tablets will have a 10 inch screen. It will be 3G tablet with wi-fi support. Users of the tablet will be able to make both phone and video calls using VOIP applications like Skype. We will provide 5 megapixel rear camera and 2 MP front camera in it," Sabharwal said.
The company has three manufacturing plants in the country, located in Bhiwadi, Roorkee and Greater Noida.
