The South Korean electronics giant is making the investment despite recent labour protests at the plant over wage revisions, union recognition, and work conditions.
The company has been battling labour issues with the workers and the management at loggerheads. Most recently, the Sriperumbudur plant, which produces TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines, saw worker protests after a wave of suspensions in February. That was the second instance of a labour standoff at the facility within six months.
It followed hundreds of workers at the facility staging a five-week protest last September, demanding higher wages and recognition of their union. Following the strike, Samsung agreed to address several of the workers' demands.
Samsung did not respond to ET's queries.
