The electronics sector has emerged as the biggest recipient of PLI incentives among the 14 sectors covered by the scheme, as the government pushes to expand domestic manufacturing, attract investment and reduce dependence on imports.
PTI reported that the government had disbursed a total of Rs 36,754 crore to PLI beneficiaries across sectors between the scheme's launch in 2020 and June 30 this year.
The PLI scheme was launched in 2020 with an overall approved outlay of Rs 1.91 lakh crore across 14 sectors, including electronics and pharmaceuticals. Under the scheme, eligible companies receive fiscal incentives linked to incremental sales over a specified base year.
Electronics manufacturing gets a push
The PLI scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing was introduced in 2020 with a specific focus on boosting domestic mobile phone production.As many as 32 companies were approved as beneficiaries under the electronics manufacturing scheme. The programme has since supported the expansion of India's mobile phone manufacturing base, with smartphones becoming one of the country's leading export commodities.
The tenure of the electronics PLI scheme, originally set for five years from 2020-21 to 2024-25, was extended by a year through 2025-26.
Smartphone exports have risen sharply during this period, increasing to about $30 billion in 2025-26 from $5.5 billion in 2021-22.
Pharma, food and auto also receive PLI payouts
Across the broader PLI programme, the pharmaceutical sector received Rs 6,662 crore in incentives as of June, according to the DPIIT data.Food products and automobiles and auto components were the next major recipients, with Rs 3,271.44 crore and Rs 3,174.15 crore, respectively, disbursed to beneficiary companies.
The government launched the PLI programme across 14 sectors to strengthen manufacturing capabilities, encourage investment, promote exports and create jobs while lowering India's reliance on imported goods.
The latest disbursement data comes as the electronics sector's PLI scheme enters its extended final year, with the sharp rise in smartphone exports marking a significant expansion from the levels seen when the programme was launched.
