'India aims to be major producer of electronic goods by 2020'

India seeks to be a major producer of electronic goods under its 'Vision 2020' plan, a senior official said today.

KOLKATA: India seeks to be a major producer of electronic goods under its 'Vision 2020' plan, a senior official said today.

"Vision 2020 envisaged that India will be a major producer of electronic goods by that year," DG of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) Omkar Rai said.

Rai said that India was seen as a outsourcing nation in the past.

"Now, that idea has changed as India has gradually transformed into a producing nation and is consistently moving up the value chain," he said at the Infocom seminar here.

Many start-ups are now being set up in the IT sector, Rai said.

Consumption value of electronic goods in the country was $400 million, while internal production was only $100 million.

Both IT revenue and exports are rising, he said.
