NEW DELHI: Haier Appliances India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the $16.2-billion Chinese consumer durable giant, plans to make India an export hub for refrigerators.

The company is looking at expanding its Pune facility to increase exports of refrigerators to 25% by 2009 from 12% currently. Moreover, the company is targeting a turnover of Rs 550 crore this fiscal as against Rs 325 crore last year.

We currently export refrigerators to Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa. Now, we are also looking at the US market, said Haier India chief operating officer Pranay Dhabhai at the launch of a new range of split ACs and refrigerators on Thursday. Looking at the response for our new products, we would accordingly expand the capacity of the Pune facility to a million refrigerators from 3.5 lakh refrigerators currently, he added.

In the AC segment, Haier India is eyeing a marketshare of close to 10% by the end of current year from 4% presently. The countrys ACs market is expected to touch two million units this year. The company would also launch a new range of CTVs and washing machines later this year. We are targeting a sale of one lakh units in washing machines and two lakh units in the CTVs segment this year, he said.

Moreover, Haier India would spend Rs 23 crore on campaigns and promotions over the next two months. So far, we have been spending around 10% of our revenues on promotions and brand-building initiatives. This year, it will be a bit high, Mr Dhabhai added.
