BANGALORE: The EMS (electronics manufacturing services) Global Alliance on Wednesday said it's targeting a combined sales of $1 billion by 2009 as it bets big on India as a centralised design hub.
The EMS Alliance, which currently has sales of $600 million growing from $180 million four years ago, held its annual meet here on Wednesday to finalise its strategy for the year ahead.
Representatives of the Alliance from Brazil (Teikon), the US (SMC), Sweden (NOTE), China (Radiance) and India (Rangsons Electonics) participated in the meet.
Indian EMS industry is projected to be $2 billion by 2009, Alliance officials said adding India will be a major manufacturing as well as a customer base in the future.
EMS Global Alliance Chairman Knut Pogost said, India will serve not only as a solid manufacturing base, but is all set to become a huge customer base as well, with global electronics majors setting up operations in India.

"Today, with 13,000 employees, 27,000 sq metres of production area and 36 SMT production lines, EMS Alliance is a consortium that is highly responsive and cost-effective," Pogost told reporters.The electronics industry in India is pegged at $25 billion on Wednesday, and is expected to grow to $70 billion by 2009. Currently, EMS has a three per cent share at $773 million, officials said.
CEO of Rangsons Electronics, Pavan Ranga said, "We envisage high growth rates in EMS industry and also, consolidation and movement towards Asia and particularly India."
