Gizmos to be powered with wire-free chargers

A laptop, mobile phone, digital camera, MP3 player are part of the briefcase of many a jet set executive.

A laptop, mobile phone, digital camera, MP3 player are part of the briefcase of many a jet set executive. Add to this list a host of chargers to keep them all running and you end up with a tangle of wires that you would wish to get rid off.

A wireless charger would definitely be a boon for everyone from high-flying executives to the common folks. There are a few in the market but these little matchbox sized devices do need to be charged (with wired chargers) before you leave home.

Researchers everywhere from MIT, NTT DoCoMo, Motorola to Apple and others are trying hard to get the right wire free charger. The focus of such efforts is on how to transmit power wirelessly.

NTT DoCoMo is working on ‘contact-free’ chargers. At MIT researchers have worked out a theoretical scheme for a wireless energy transfer that could charge devices within a couple of meters of a small power base station plugged into an electrical socket.

The power base station emits low-frequency electromagnetic radiation in the range of 4 to 10 megahertz. A receiver embedded in the gadget — like a power-harvesting circuit — can be designed to resonate at the same frequency emitted by the power station. When it comes within a couple of meters of the station, it absorbs the energy.

So, for charging the phone or the laptop, just bring it within range of the power base station. Even as you send SMS, take calls or check-out emails the device is getting charged.

This sort of a wireless energy set-up can be fitted alongside a WiFi (for wireless Internet access at homes, offices, airports etc.) access point to ensure that the device is being constantly charged from any location. The downside is that such wireless chargers could take longer to charge than the wired ones. And they won’t be in the market till next year.
