Energy-efficient models are darling of the house

KOLKATA: Indian consumers are giving energy-efficient home appliances a star billing. Leading white goods companies say their energy-efficient models are selling twice as fast as regular ones since they help cut power bills.

Energy-efficient home appliances display a rating system that uses stars to show their degree of efficiency. While there is no independent sales data for these star-rated products, top manufacturers claim sales of energy-efficient refrigerators are growing by 25-30% as compared to the category growth rate of 12%. Star-rated ACs are seeing sales rise by 35-40% as against 17% growth in the segment overall.

Encouraged by demand, manufacturers are soon planning to roll out energy-efficient models for washing machines and televisions. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), the government body driving adoption of energy-efficient products, has still not made it mandatory for manufacturers to make only energy-efficient models. However, BEE is soon going to roll out energy standards for all consumer electronic products.

The campaign carried out by BEE and efforts by manufacturers have created a lot of awareness for star-rated products. Hence, we have made our entire refrigerator line-up star-rated. All Samsung split ACs are also star-rated. This has translated into 30% sales growth for these products, said Samsung India deputy-MD R Zutshi.

Corroborating, Whirlpool of India V-P (sales) TK Saha said: Star-rated products are becoming a basic feature and not a differentiation any more.

According to BEE, higher star rating ensures greater energy efficiency. The system is on a scale of one to five. Consumers will be able to save 20% on electricity costs for each star upgrade. It is an advantage for products like AC which consume high energy, said Godrej Appliances COO George Menezes.

Research carried out by Godrej claims that a regular 1.5-tonne window AC will run an electricity bill of about Rs 70-80 for every eight-hour run. Whereas, a similar three-star AC will enable around 50% savings on electricity bill.

Similarly, a five-star refrigerator will save three times of electricity than its price through its lifecycle of 10 years, said Mr Menezes.
