Counterfeit account for 70-75% of replacement battery market:ICA

Counterfeit batteries accounted for 70-75 per cent of replacements for mobile phones, the Indian Cellular Association (ICA) said on Wednesday.

KOLKATA: Counterfeit batteries accounted for 70-75 per cent of replacements for mobile phones, the Indian Cellular Association (ICA) said on Wednesday.

ICA in a statement said that nearly nine crore original mobile handsets were sold in India in 2006-07 while replacement batteries were estimated at 4-4.5 crore.

ICA president Pankaj Mohindroo failed to provide data of total number of mobile batteries which exploded.

"I do not forsee any life threat from battery explosions and we do not have data on the number of such cases," Mahindroo said.

He said that they are unable to do much to reduce the price gap between original and counterfeit batteries.

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) scientist Guhar Raza said that non-standard accessories lacked safety mechanisms like Protection Circuit Module.
