BEL bags a Rs 100 crore order for EVMs
Navratna PSU Bharat Electronics Limited has bagged a Rs 100 crore order to supply 1.02 lakh electronic voting machines to the Election Commission.
"Out of the 1.02 lakh EVMs, the first batch of 5,000 is being despatched today", BEL CMD, V V R Sastry told reporters after Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami unveiled its new Mass Manufacturing Facility of EVMs here on Tuesday.
The total order will be supplied in the next two months, he said.
This facility, which has rolled out lakhs of EVMs has now been modernised at the cost of around Rs eight crore, to meet the ever-changing technological needs of the electronics manufacturing industry.
It will also help address the defence offset business and meet the operational requirements of aerospace and avionics business, Sastry said.
"The facility will also be utilised for export purposes. We are looking at offset implementation in a big way and are expecting good orders in contract manufacturing. BEL will be holding talks with Lockheed & Martin and Boeing in this context", he said.
On the EVMS, Sastry said BEL is working on developing some variants to the EVMs to "suit conditions in different countries" and is "actively working with five to six countries from whom it is expecting good leads shortly".
