NEW DELHI: India can save up to Rs 7,000 crore by replacing wooden products with items made from bamboo, Industry body Assocham said.
The government spends Rs 10,000 crore annually on buying wooden products for various state departments and replacing these products with bamboo will not only reduce costs, but would also help in generating employment for millions of households in the country, a paper brought out by Assocham on 'Waste to Wealth' pointed out.
The chamber said products such as doors, windows, ventilators, ceiling partition and different kinds of pre-fabricated shelters which are made from woods can also be manufactured using bamboo as raw material with same quality strength and reduced costs.
"In addition to saving costs, bamboo and jute products are helpful in protecting environment also, as this would help in protecting forests in the country too," Assocham President Venugopal N Dhoot said in a statement.
Bamboo is also the fastest growing canopy for re-greening of degraded lands and it releases 35 per cent more oxygen than equivalent stands of trees, the chamber said.
