BANGALORE: India’s semiconductor industry veterans seem to have been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug. In a sector which is dominated by MNCs in India, some well known figures of the industry including ISA Chairman Rajendra Khare and NXP’s P V G Menon, are now quitting their cushy jobs and setting out on their own.
Rajendra Khare, who was heading Broadcom’s India operations for past few years after the latter bought out his first company Armedia, quit in August 2006 and started his company Indusedge Innovations.
The ISA Chairman says, “The association has been looking at how to drive entrepreneurship in this sector in India when I thought that maybe I should `walk the talk’. So I have started Indusedge which is into embedded product solutions aimed at digital video, wireless and networking areas.’’
Two other veterans of the industry who are reportedly considering setting up their own outfits are C S Balasubramanian, managing director of Intersil India and P V G Menon, senior business development manager, NXP. Mr Khare says that the trend, though still small, will strengthen in future. So what’s driving it! Simply put, India as a market.
“A few years ago India didn’t have a domestic market in the semiconductor space. Today it is the fastest growing though not the biggest market in the world,’’ he added.
