BenQ to focus on mid-level notebooks

NEW DELHI: Reeling under its disappointing foray into the cellphone market, Taiwan-based company BenQ has decided to exit the mobile phone market in India.

The company now plans to relaunch itself as a new corporate entity, concentrating on low and middle-level notebooks. The company would focus on digital projectors, computer monitors and other electronics. BenQ has been present in the Indian mobile space since 2005. Ironically, the company had earlier said that it expected to capture about 40% of the mobile phone market in India and become one of the top-five players here.

The mobile phone business (in India) has been a setback for us and in the face of stiff competition we would now concentrate on notebooks or netbook market. We expect good market valuation in this business, BenQ MD Govindan Ramanujam told ET. This implies that the company will not launch any other handset. It has made fresh investment of $2 million in the notebook market here in addition to a $3-million investment already made.
