WhatsApp on September 3, 2026 launched Bill payments in India, a move that positions the messaging platform to capture a larger share of the country's booming digital payments ecosystem.

The launch comes days after data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) showed UPI processing hit a record high in August 2026, with transactions rising to 24.51 billion, up 3.6 per cent from July, while transaction value stood at Rs 29.82 lakh crore.

On a year-on-year basis, transaction volume increased 22 per cent, while value rose 20 per cent, with average daily volume climbing to 791 million transactions. August marked the second consecutive month of record UPI transaction volumes, after July's 23.66 billion transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore.

India's UPI boom

UPI, launched by NPCI in April 2016, completed a decade of operations earlier this year. Annual transaction volume has grown nearly 12,000-fold since its launch, from 2 crore transactions in FY 2016-17 to over 24,161 crore transactions in FY 2025-26, with transaction value crossing Rs 314 lakh crore for the year.

Monthly transaction volumes had crossed 2,000 crore for the first time in August 2025, with December 2025 recording the highest monthly volume of the decade at 2,163 crore transactions, before August 2026 set a fresh all-time high.

The network now has over 700 banks live on it, up from 21 at launch, and accounts for nearly 49 per cent of global real-time payment transaction volume, a milestone the International Monetary Fund recognised in June 2025. UPI is also live in eight countries, including the UAE, Singapore, France, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Qatar.

An analysis of UPI transactions shows person-to-merchant (P2M) payments account for 63 per cent of total transaction volume, driven largely by small-ticket payments, with 86 per cent of such transactions below Rs 500, reflecting UPI's deep penetration into routine retail and day-to-day commerce.

Person-to-person (P2P) transfers, meanwhile, dominate transaction value at 71 per cent, pointing to their continued use for higher-ticket transactions between individuals.

It is against this backdrop that WhatsApp has rolled out Bill payments, a feature powered by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network that gives users access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card and loan repayments.

With Bill payments, users can pay utility bills securely without leaving WhatsApp. The rupee icon at the top of the home screen provides access to bill payments, past payment history, upcoming bills, and multiple accounts under a single provider, along with a choice of payment modes.

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta India, said the feature aims to bring the same simplicity that WhatsApp offers for everyday communication to routine household tasks such as bill payments.

He added that the company wants to make paying a bill on WhatsApp as effortless as sending a message, and extend the convenience of digital payments to users across remote parts of the country.

Key features

  • Household bills summary: Bills are pre-fetched, and any biller previously paid through WhatsApp Bill payments appears on Payments Home for one-tap access.

  • Multiple accounts per biller: Users can manage bills for home, office and family under a single provider, all in one place.

  • Popular categories on Payments Home: Frequently used bill categories surface automatically, with a "See All" option to browse the complete list of over 20 categories.

How to use WhatsApp Bill payments?

  • Open WhatsApp and tap the rupee icon at the top of the home screen.

  • Select the bill category and biller.

  • Add and confirm account details.

  • Review the fetched bill amount and required details.

  • Select a payment mode: UPI, Debit Card or Credit Card.

  • Confirm the payment.

WhatsApp already supports several everyday tasks in India, including mobile recharges, metro ticket bookings across cities, and access to citizen services through government chatbots.

With Bill payments, the company is extending this functionality to include routine utility payments within the same chat interface, at a time when UPI-linked digital transactions continue to scale at record pace across the country.

The company said Bill payments will be rolled out gradually across India and will be available for all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
