SC refuses more time for DHFL’s Dheeraj Wadhawan to surrender in ₹34,000 crore bank fraud case
The Supreme Court has denied Dheeraj Wadhawan's request for more time to surrender. He is accused in a major bank loan fraud. The court had previously cancelled his medical bail. Wadhawan must now surrender. However, the court has directed the CBI...
The apex court had on August 5 cancelled the medical bail given by the Delhi High Court in September last year and asked him to surrender in two weeks.
Wadhawan is one of the accused in an alleged bank loan fraud of more than ₹34,000 crore, the largest loan fraud case in the country.
"We are not inclined to extend the time for surrendering as sought by the applicant. However, as stated that he may require medical attention on a regular basis in the light of the reports submitted by AIIMS Hospital, we direct the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) and jail authorities concerned to ensure that the applicant is taken every Saturday morning to the orthopaedic department, AIIMS, New Delhi," a bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma directed.
Senior counsel Kapil Sibal, appearing for the accused, told the SC that his client was suffering from serious medical ailments and needed surgical intervention. However, the apex court rejected Sibal's argument, saying "You (Wadhawan) can go to prison. They (CBI and jail authorities) will take you to hospital whenever required."
