NBFC credit growth rises to 15.8% in August as gold, consumer durable loans surge

NBFCs' overall credit grew 15.8% year-on-year to Rs 60.6 lakh crore at the end of August as compared with 14.9% growth seen a month prior.
Year-on-year, their gold loans surged 69.1% to Rs 3.65 lakh crore while consumer durable loans jumped 56.4% to 77784 crore at the end of the reporting month. These two verticals grew 46.8% and 19.6% respectively at the same period last year.
Housing loans, which contributed the most in NBFCs' retail loan pie, grew 12.1% to Rs 8.62 lakh crore at the end of August against a 3.8% rise earlier.
On aggregate, NBFCs' retail loans surged 22% to 26.5 lakh crore against a 13.6% rise in the year-ago period. Retail loans accounted for nearly 44% of the total NBFC lending universe.
Meanwhile, their lending to the services sector moderated to 16.2% from 24%, largely due to deceleration in segments such as `trade’ and `transport operator’. lending to commercial real estate remained robust.
Growth in credit to industry was marginally up at 8.4% in August 2026 as compared with 8.3% in the year ago period. Credit to agriculture and allied activities recorded a 17.4% growth as against 5.1% earlier.
