Mumbai: Commercial insurance rates in India declined across property, financial and professional liability, and cyber insurance in the first nine months of 2026, as rising insurer capacity and intensifying competition improved pricing conditions for businesses, according to Marsh’s Global Insurance Market Index.

India recorded some of the steepest rate reductions across the India, Middle East and Africa (IMEA) region, with property and financial and professional insurance rates falling for the fourth consecutive quarter and cyber insurance rates declining amid increased competition.

Property insurance rates fell for the fourth straight quarter, with some Indian clients securing reductions of as much as 45% in the first quarter, although cuts were typically lower. The regional average decline was 10%, Marsh said.

Competition intensified as insurer capacity expanded and the removal of tariffs in India increased pricing flexibility. Insurers competed more aggressively for well-managed risks, giving businesses greater negotiating power over premiums, coverage limits and policy terms.

Financial and professional liability insurance also benefited from stronger insurer appetite and available capacity. Directors’ and officers’ liability rates declined by as much as 20% in India in the first quarter, while professional indemnity rates also fell.

The competitive environment is allowing businesses to reassess coverage limits, deductibles and policy structures, rather than focusing solely on reducing premiums, Marsh said.

Cyber insurance rates recorded another decline, with India seeing the steepest reductions in the IMEA region in the third quarter. The regional average fell 10%, marking the 12th consecutive quarter of declining cyber insurance rates across IMEA.

Despite softer pricing, cyber risks continue to evolve as businesses become more digitally dependent and adopt emerging technologies. Marsh said companies could use the favourable market conditions to strengthen protection and ensure their policies keep pace with changing exposures.

The decline in commercial insurance rates comes amid evolving geopolitical risks, supply-chain disruptions, cyber threats and natural catastrophe exposures. Marsh advised businesses to use the current market environment to review their insurance programmes, improve coverage where necessary and prepare for a potential turn in the insurance cycle.
