From SGX Nifty to GIFT Nifty: Understanding the evolution of India's global market indicator

July 2023 heralded an important change for India as it moved from SGX Nifty to GIFT Nifty, a development with major implications for the financial sector. GIFT Nifty aligns with Indian regulations and provides attractive tax incentives for foreign...

Something shifted in Indian financial markets in July 2023. SGX Nifty, which had traded on the Singapore Exchange for nearly two decades, was shut down1. GIFT Nifty replaced it and now operates out of GIFT City in Gujarat, on Indian soil. The change was not just about location. It was about India taking back something that had long been handled elsewhere. Here is a look at how this shift came about and why it matters.

The role SGX Nifty played

Foreign investors have always been interested in Indian equities. But getting access was not always simple. National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has set trading hours and operates under domestic rules, which left international participants with limited options outside those windows. SGX Nifty solved that problem. It ran on the Singapore Exchange under MAS regulation2, giving global funds a regulated and familiar place to trade Nifty futures3.

Singapore worked well for this. It had strong financial institutions, a trusted regulatory setup, and a time zone that connected Indian and European market hours. Over the years, SGX Nifty became something traders around the world checked regularly to get a feel for where Indian markets were headed3.

The case for bringing it home

The push to move the contract to India had been going on for a while4. India's equity market was growing fast, but one of its most important derivatives was being traded abroad. That did not sit well with Indian regulators and policymakers.

GIFT City was already being built as India's own international financial zone. The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) was set up to regulate it5. NSE IX was up and running inside the zone. The groundwork was done. In July 2023, SGX Nifty was officially closed and GIFT Nifty launched on NSE IX, taking over the role SGX Nifty had held for years6.

What makes GIFT Nifty different

GIFT Nifty is not the same contract with a new name. The exchange, regulatory framework and tax rules are different.. Foreign investors who meet the criteria for trading at GIFT City do not have to pay Securities Transaction Tax, GST, or capital gains tax on eligible trades. These benefits were put in place to make GIFT City a real alternative to offshore financial centres, not just a replacement on paper.

The contract runs across two trading sessions. The morning session goes from 6:30 AM to 3:40 PM IST and the evening session from 4:35 PM to 2:45 AM IST. Settlement is in US dollars, which works well for international investors who operate in dollar terms.

Reading GIFT Nifty as a market signal

Most retail investors in India will not trade GIFT Nifty directly. But the contract is still worth paying attention to. The way it moves overnight tells you a lot about how global markets are feeling about India. A big drop might mean risk sentiment has turned negative. A solid gain could mean foreign investors are feeling confident.

Kotak Neo makes it easy to keep track of this. The platform shows live GIFT Nifty data alongside Indian indices, so you do not have to check multiple sources to stay informed.

If you want to put that signal in context, watching INDEXNSE: NIFTY_50 alongside GIFT Nifty helps you see whether global sentiment is actually showing up in domestic market movement.

What this shift means for India

The move from SGX Nifty to GIFT Nifty is part of something bigger. India wants to build financial infrastructure that can stand alongside established global hubs. GIFT City is a big part of that effort. Having a contract like Nifty futures traded from Indian soil, under Indian regulation, sends a clear message about where India sees itself in global finance.

For investors, it simply means the contract that tracks Indian markets is now closer to those markets than it has ever been.

The significance of the shift to GIFT Nifty

The transition from SGX Nifty to GIFT Nifty was years in the making. India had a fast-growing equity market, yet one of its key derivatives was being priced abroad. Moving it home was always going to happen. GIFT City is still growing, and GIFT Nifty is now one of its most visible products.
