Singur gets hi-tech SBI branch

This is SBI’s 785th branch in West Bengal. Overall, it has a network of over 9,000 branches across the country.

KOLKATA: The Tata Motors car project at Singur may still be stuck in the tilled soil of Singur. But, hopes run high, despite the huge controversy over the land acquisition issue. Nevertheless, Singur’s largely agrarian economy and its rustic residents already have something to cheer about -- a bank.

The State Bank of India (SBI) inaugurated on Wednesday, a branch at Singur proper, very near the site of the proposed Tata Motors project. It’s a first of its kind in the sense that the branch is equipped with the most modern technology available so that it is able to cope with high octane business transactions.

Speaking at the inauguration, SBI’s new managing director Yogesh Agarwal mentioned that the bank has received regulatory clearance for opening the branch just a month back.

SBI’s Bengal circle head US Roy, (now promoted as deputy managing director) expected that with the coming of the Tatas, the economic opportunity that it will provide in the shape of industrial development and ancillaries in the area, would bring great prosperity to the region as a whole.

This is SBI’s 785th branch in West Bengal. Overall, it has a network of over 9,000 branches across the country. Further, its associate banks have a combined network of around 5,000 branches.

Not surprisingly, the bank management has adopted a strategy to open branches only in growth-bound areas. Singur, the management feels, is one of such areas.

The new branch is ready with the most cutting edge technology to cater to all the
conceivable needs of even the most sophisticated people and the largest corporates, SBI said in a press statement.

The Tatas will also be offered all the modern technological facilities that they require as the branch is being opened with core banking solution with electronic fund transfer and real time gross settlement facilities, read the statement.

The bank also said that it intends to associate itself with re-skilling of local people. It is ready with development packages for agriculturists including marginal farmers and landless labourers.
