ET Graphics: Loan write-offs by PSBs top Rs 58,000 crore in FY25 even as bank frauds, NPAs surge

RBI data for FY25 shows public sector banks (PSBs) wrote off loans worth over ₹58,000 crore, even as reported frauds in banks more than doubled to ₹36,013 crore from ₹12,231 crore in FY24.

Gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) of PSBs declined to ₹2.83 lakh crore in March 2025 with a GNPA ratio of 2.58%, down from 4.97% in 2023.

Despite this, major banks like SBI, Canara Bank, PNB and UBI collectively wrote off over ₹58,000 crore in loans. Meanwhile, bank frauds of ₹1 lakh and above surged to ₹36,013 crore in FY25, reversing a two-year decline.

RBI data also recorded 1,629 wilful defaulters and a total loan outstanding of ₹1.62 lakh crore.
