The memorandum refers to the earlier Office Memorandum dated September 6, which had fixed October 7 as the date for the meeting. It asks that the change be brought to the attention of the Council's members and expresses regret for the inconvenience caused.
It was issued with the approval of the Revenue Secretary, who is the ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council, and is signed by Shaifali G Singh, Commissioner, GST Council Secretariat.
The 57th meeting was first scheduled for September 12 in New Delhi, with an officers' meeting preceding it on September 10 and 11, as per Office Memoranda dated August 28 and September 2.
The date was later changed to October 7 through the memorandum of September 6, with the officers' meeting set for October 5 and 6. The September 12 date had coincided with the BRICS Leaders' Summit in New Delhi.
The meeting will be the first of the Council in more than a year. The 56th meeting, held on September 3 and 4, 2025, approved the GST 2.0 overhaul, which simplified the rate structure and introduced a special 40 per cent rate for a limited set of demerit and luxury goods, replacing the earlier 28 per cent slab and compensation cess on those items.
