Volkswagen scandal: Auto giant to review India impact soon

Volkswagen AG, in the next couple of days, will review its Indian subsidiary’s exposure to the global emissions cheating scandal.

TOKYO: Volkswagen AG, in the next couple of days, will review its Indian subsidiary’s exposure to the global emissions cheating scandal.

Speaking on the sidelines of Tokyo Motor Show, Herbett Diess, the newly appointed CEO said the company is reviewing the impact on India-made diesel cars. “It’s very difficult to judge India impact right now. We will be analysing the impact tomorrow and day after and then probably judge better,” Deiss told Bloomberg TV India.

Volkswagen had revealed earlier that nearly 11 million cars worldwide may be affected by this scandal. Last month, the Indian government had directed ARAI, the vehicle testing agency to probe if the VW engines used in India, are affected by the cheat software.

Volkswagen, recently got a go ahead from the European regulator to fix engines. The Indian operation uses the same homologation process. VW may reach out to Indian authorities to agree to the same methodology to fix the issue. “Our plan to fix the engine has been agreed by European authorities. As the engines for India use the same homologation procedure we think that could be a master plan to talk to the Indian government,” Diess explained.
